Mr. John W. Jones, 69, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, formerly of Brentford, South Dakota, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 3, 2010, at his daughter's home surrounded by his wife and loving family.

Mr. Jones was born July 4, 1940, in Redfield, South Dakota, a son of the late Hugh and Ruth (LaBay) Jones.

As a high school student, John was an excellent athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball and track. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He married Beulah Joanne Bollinger in Brentford, South Dakota, on October 12, 1963. He was employed by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, and was assigned to the Rapid City, South Dakota, flood in 1972, and to Resurrection City in Washington, D.C. He was particularly proud of being a member of the World Health Organization team and his assignment to Bangladesh in 1975 to assist in the eradication of the last known case of smallpox. He returned to the CDC to work as the Director of Immunization for the states of South Dakota, Wyoming, Alabama, South Carolina and Idaho. He received multiple awards for his 30 years of service with the CDC and retired with distinction in 1994.

Following his retirement, he returned home to South Dakota to enjoy his retirement and his many interests which included working with wood, hunting, golfing, spear fishing, scuba diving, camping, gardening and artifact collecting. In June of this year, he left his home to seek treatment in Denver for cancer. Hello out there. Jones and I worked at CDC about the same time. I come from NoDak-Jamestown. A common interest is duck and GOose hunting if you are from that place. John was the best goose hunter and shooter I ever knew. His skill at shooting geese with a bow and arrow was never outdone by anyone I ever met. And we were both interested in the outdoor life. We were disease controllers--measles was a common interest, and its control. Sorry to hear of his passing--he was a good man and they are hard to find these days. Best to the family. jl conrad atlanta

I remember John coming to visit our office in Jackson. He was informal in his cowboy hat and had the friendly way of a Wyomingite with the knowledge of a professional!

Beulah,

We were sorry to hear of John's passing. We saw him not too many years ago at Terrill's get together in Aberdeen. It was great seeing him again.

Of course, Marv and I have fond memories of John and you when we went to school together in Brentford.

I would love to hear from you. Take care of yourself. Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy to you and your family.

Beulah and family, I was sorry to hear of John's death. I am sure we knew each other years ago. I was married to LeRoy McDowell from Brentford. LeRoy graduated from Brentford and was a good friend of John's. I remember spending time with you and John in the 60's. I am not sure when we last saw one another. I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember John as being quite the character and a fine man. My sincere sympathy to you and your family. Sincerely, Georgia Ramos
